On the night of May 16, 1969, a small group of young people climbed through a window of the Maagdenhuis (Maiden House), the administrative nerve center of the University of Amsterdam. This was the start of a five-day student occupation that held the city in its grip and eventually involved hundreds of occupiers and many more protesters on the street. A protest that did not stand on its own but was part of a worldwide call for more democratization in the educational system and society itself.
This online exhibition tells the story of the Maagdenhuis Occupation of ’69 but also wonders if students today are still willing to take action for their needs? Read the stories and tell us your own!
